About Abei Liu

Liu Cheng-Kun (Abei) was born in Taipei in 1981 and currently resides and works in Taipei. Since 2021, he has co-founded Elebbit Co., Ltd., a design, illustration, art , and fashion-related business, with Cheung Gi Chin (Gi). In 2014, Abei began sharing his illustrations on social media platforms and started participating in various exhibitions and design projects, thereby establishing himself as an illustrator and artist. His works depict fashionable, warm, and emotive elements of life.

Abei graduated from the Fashion Design Department and has self-taught various skills, such as graphic design. His strong interest in creating tangible handmade artworks has been an ongoing pursuit. Thus, he continuously experiments with different materials and presentation methods, oscillating between digital and analog

The artist's works are closely related to everyday life and often extend to visually symbolic creations. Abei believes that such generational resonance can become a collective memory for an entire generation. Through viewing his works, Abei believes that viewers naturally have their own interpretations and readings. Therefore, he tends to avoid directly addressing heavy issues and instead focuses on presenting simple perspectives and our lives visually, removing overly complex thoughts and aiming for pure reflexive feeling. Perhaps this approach also reflects a phenomenon of the present era.

About Mask Fam

The MASKBOY series began in late 2014. MASKBOY is not a specific character; to me, "he" can be any living being- he could be you, he could be me. Therefore, “his” personality evolves and becomes enriched depending on the life behind the mask.

Over the years, the MASKBOY series has continued to grow, and I aim to expand MASKBOY‘s worldview through the development of the “MASK FAM” series. MASKBOY is just one member of this “MASK FAM.” The focus of the series shifts toward the diverse carriers behind the masks, much like a family of masks. This allows for a broader range of creative expressions and a greater variety of members within the family.

A MOMENT / 2019

A MOMENT is a small reflection-

A little about sharing,
A little about time,
A thought about the fleeting moment.

The core of the piece comes from a looping animation made up of 35 stop-motion frames.

It tells a simple story: MASKBOY arrives from another place into our world, hoping to share a piece of candy.

But just as he's about to give it, it slips from his hand.
He bends down to pick it up-a small, tender moment frozen in time.

Art Festival of SiangShan Wetland / 2022

“Lay down & take it easy.”

When we think of rice paddies, we often imagine vast, open plains. But in Qiedong Village, the farmland is nestled within surrounding hills and forests, creating a uniquely tranquil and secluded atmosphere.

The artwork is installed on a terraced field. Behind the first terrace, where the piece is located, stands a row of small trees. At the very top, a dense forest forms the backdrop. It’s the perfect place to lie down, gaze at the sky, watch the breeze ripple through the rice fields, and maybe even spot an egret resting for a moment. Spending a lazy afternoon here feels simply wonderful.

For this piece, I drew inspiration from the local produce of Qiedong Village and created a large illustrated picnic mat. MASKBOY and Hua Hua have come along to enjoy a peaceful and healing time together in this serene setting.

As the warm spring sunlight shines down, we open our arms to embrace hope and welcome a fresh beginning.

Through the beloved characters Hua Hua and Maskboy, created by artist Abei, this large-scale installation brings a sense of warmth and healing. Its glossy, reflective surface captures and mirrors the colors of its surroundings, symbolizing how all beautiful things radiate light. Dreams gather and grow at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi.
